Gambier Island (Cha7elkwnech) is the largest of all Islands in Howe Sound (Atl’ka7tsem Nexwnewu7ts) It is located within the traditional territory of the Skwxwu7mesh Nation.
The island is the home to a mix of full time to part time residents. Most full-time residents live in the New Brighton, Gambier Harbour, and West Bay area. The reason for this is that this area is serviced by BC Hydro, Rural internet and is accessible by a BC Foot ferry to the Langdale terminal.
Gambier island has a mix of bare land lots and a mix of various cabins and homes. Most of the island is off grid and is serviced by direct water taxis or private boat and solar systems for power. Gambier Island Conservancy has been formed to provide trails to hike in and help protect the environment of the island. When people want to build, they need to apply for permits from Sunshine Coast Regional District.

The Sea Ranch subdivision is located in Long Bay and is a family friendly community with a full time care taker who operates a community farm. The area is a bikeable community that has the use of its own private marina, community area, and hiking trails. It is serviced by private water taxi by Cormorant Marine as well as Mercury Transport
